The Dolna Art Story

Dolna was not born in a boardroom. It was born from a moment of poetic synchronicity. While searching for a name that could embody Mitu Basu's desire to gently uplift artists — like the tender push of a child's swing — she shared her vision with renowned designer Subrata Bhowmick. He responded, "In Bengali, that's called a Dolna."

The resonance deepened: Dolna was also the name of Mitu's late mother — her fountainhead of beauty, creativity, and grace. With heartfelt affirmation, Subrata said, "Let Dolna be a tribute to your mother. With her blessings, let's begin." He hand-scripted the Dolna logo, embedding Mitu's signature bindi into the 'O' — a mark of individuality, commitment, and distinctly Indian identity.

Dolna Art is today not just a brand. It is a living tribute to creativity, connection, and cultural depth.

Our Ethos

Our Ethos

Dolna's ethos is simple: bring art to where people are
and bring people closer to art.

DolnaArt's guiding principle is clear: deliver exceptional art to where audiences live and work, while drawing discerning collectors and communities closer to extraordinary creators. We achieve this through strategic inclusion and ecosystem expansion, systematically addressing longstanding imbalances. The artist remains our north star, as we cultivate art as a prestigious, sustainable, and globally competitive profession.

What you will find at Dolna Art

What We Are Building Beyond Ourselves

A model. A template. Something artists can one day run themselves — city by city, chapter by chapter — the way the progressive artists of another generation took Indian art to the world, each keeping their own distinct voice.

The articulate ones leading. The collective moving forward. Every artist retaining everything that makes them singular.

We are planting that today. What grows from it belongs to everyone.

Our Vision

What We Stand For

To be India's most trusted address for living artists — where collectors discover tomorrow's masters today.

Born from a life lived inside art, communication, and creativity — Dolna Art champions the living artist, places traditional mastery beside contemporary vision, and carries India's creative intelligence to the world.

Conviction in curation. Fairness in practice. Everything else follows.

Art Belongs Where Families Gather

From the beginning, Dolna Art has never exhibited in a traditional gallery.

In India, a gallery is still - for most families - an intimidating space. You don't walk in with your children on a Sunday afternoon. There is a gate, visible or invisible, that says: this is not for you.

Dolna Art's answer has always been to go where families already are. Hotels, clubs, malls, colleges, courtyards. We were among the first to place art in malls - taking it out of exclusive spaces and into the path of everyday life. Every venue since has followed the same instinct: meet the audience where they are.

“The goal was never to make art accessible in theory. It was to put it somewhere children would see it, ask questions about it, and grow up knowing it was for them.”

Every Dolna Art event is designed so that a first-time visitor and a seasoned collector stand in the same room, equally welcome.

The Future of Art

The hand creates. Technology carries it to the world. Instantly.

Collectors will increasingly cherish what only the human hand can offer — the grain of the brushstroke, the authenticity of handmade creation. And technology will ensure it reaches the right collector, in the right city, at precisely the right moment.

What Will Always Remain

What Will Always Remain

Dolna Art continues to evolve — and its core remains unchanged: to create meaningful connections between artists and those who value their work. A space where art is discovered with discernment, artists are valued with fairness, and trust carries through to ownership.

Founder's Profile

Some people collect art.Mitu Basu chose to collect artists.

Every Brushstroke Tells a Story

She did not stumble into the art world. She chose it. And then, at a defining moment, she chose it again — more deliberately, more completely, at the cost of everything she had already built.

Born into a Bengali family with roots in Kolkata, she grew up in Mumbai — shaped by a mother who taught her that living itself is art, a teacher who taught her to observe what others miss, and a brother who showed her that a creative life was not just possible but necessary. The creative DNA of Bengal was her inheritance. Mumbai contemporarised it.

At eighteen, asked what she wanted to do with her life, her answer was immediate:
a collector of experiences. She has been true to that answer ever since.

She Felt Everything, Long Before She Could Name It

In grade two, she added a vase and a table to a drawing of a flower. A cut flower, she reasoned, cannot stand on its own.

Her school principal — a soft-spoken German nun — heard her explanation and held her.

“You will be an artist one day.”

— Mother Gabriel

She didn't know it then. But later, those words landed.

Her Full Story

Dolna Art — A Legacy of Firsts

Sixteen years ago the art world was exclusive, gatekept and familiar. Dolna Art decided otherwise.

When Malls Were for Shopping, We Made Them Galleries.

A scooter carrying a family of four. An artist with nowhere to show it. A mall that said yes. That one conversation changed everything. Installation art found its stage at Phoenix Mills Mumbai — and the art world found a new address.

Clubs and Unconventional Spaces.

Art belongs where families gather.

At MCA Club Mumbai, parents walked in. Children stopped. Sat with the artists. Touched the work. Tried their hands. And for a moment the café could wait. That is when we knew — take art to where people already are, and people will always find their way to art.

Art Led Solutions.

Wall Street’s lobby needed a vision for channel partners.

We curated seventy bull paintings and a fifty‑foot canvas tracing the bull’s journey from cave art to mythology to finance. Art became the storyteller, proving it can solve challenges words alone cannot — transforming vision into a powerful, shared experience.

Bridging Countries Through Culture.

Emerging Indian artists. International stages. Zero cost. Flights, stays, experiences — all covered. Dolna Art has taken Indian artists across borders, placing their work in rooms where no introduction was needed because the canvas spoke first. Every exhibition a cultural handshake. Every artist an ambassador. Because culture is the most powerful bridge there is.

Weddings — Art at a Sangeet.

Celebrations deserve more than fading flowers. A wealth‑focused community embraced refinement through art. Music, dance, and live painting converged; each couple’s dance was captured on canvas and gifted. Children watched every brushstroke. Where others see occasion, Mithu Basu sees a window for art to step in, transforming moments into lasting memory.

Collaborative Openings.

Every Dolna exhibition begins with a performance aligned to the art — Kathakali for India Revisited, Ghoomar for Vibrant India, Flamenco for Audivoroma. Performance and art converse, speaking one language. This became Dolna’s signature. When both share the stage, audiences linger, drawn into intentional dialogue where no one wants to leave.

Brand Installations

At Lakme Fashion Week, seven sculptures rose from cans in seven days. Van Gogh’s hand reached for stars, a Phoenix ascended, fire burned in a belly. Celebrities paused, captivated. A can of Burn became art, proving brand activations that think like artists transform products into conversations, vision into unforgettable experiences.
